If you work in comms, PR, HR and legal you need to know there are new media laws which will affect how you do your job. That's why we are staging a new workshop with acclaimed media law expert David Banks.

by Dan Slee

It seems that every aspect of society is being disrupted by the internet and other changes and the field of media law is no exception.

A raft of changes are in the offing and we thought it would be a bright idea to offer you a workshop with one of the brightest brains in the field to help you make sense of them.

David Banks is a highly experienced figure in the arena of media law. He has co-authored recent editions of McNae's Essential Law for Journalists, he trains national newspaper groups and has worked extensively in local government and the public sector. In short, he is the 'go-to' man in the UK in the field.

We'd love to see you there. Our previous workshops have sold out and we expect the same for David's session so do be quick.

Essential media law for social media and communications

COMMS teams have worked hard to develop a range of new channels and platforms to reach their varied audiences. This provides great opportunities for creative communication. But with those opportunities come some risks.

Having your own channels and platforms makes your organisation a publisher and subject the the array of media laws that apply in the UK. Knowing your way around them is crucial to safe and effective communication.

New media laws have come into play in October 2015 which directly affect you.

At comms2point0 we have enlisted the help of media law consultant David Banks to run a one-day essential media law for social media & communications workshop. David has worked extensively with local government and the third sector providing training and consultancy for 15 years and knows the unique challenges and pitfalls in this area. He has also co-written the 18th, 19th and 20th McNae’s Essential Law for Journalists which is the go-to text for media law, he contributed to the Leveson Inquiry. Clients include the Ministry of Justice, Trinity Mirror and a number of local authorities.

This is not all about what you can't do though. David's sessions always place an emphasis on being able to get you message out, but doing so in a way that doesn't get you into trouble with the law.

The workshop will be fun, informal and essential to anyone who wants a good working knowledge of the law around communications.

What you will learn

-     An overview of the various laws that can affect communications

-     Libel, the law the protects reputation, and the reforms of the Defamation Act 2013

-     Contempt of Court, especially relevant to any authorities bring prosecutions, or involved in them in any way

-     Privacy - authorities hold a wealth of information about people, lots of which may be confidential and care is needed when dealing with comms in this area

-     Copyright - does the content you are using to produce your comms belong to you? What can you use safely. How do you protect your own intellectual property

-     Protecting the vulnerable - the media laws that look after children, vulnerable adults and victims

-     Media standards - how the regulators work.  The new press regulator, IPSO; Ofcom and the BBC Trust. How to complain effectively if you need to

-     Social media - the multiple laws that apply here and how they are sometimes broken in comms. Framing an effective social media policy that delivers results for you, while allowing people to make full use of the various platforms available today.

As a bonus...

For a month following the workshop you get free consultancy with David - you've got a question, fire him an email and he'll do his best to answer

How do I get to the Impact Hub Birmingham venue?

Impact Hub Birmingham opened this year in the Walker Building a converted Victorian maritime instruments factory. The building is 10 minutes walk from Moor Street station and 15 minutes walk from New Street station. A cab ride will take about five minutes and should cost around £6. There are car parks within two minutes walk from the venue in Meriden Street, Oxford Street and Bordesley Street.

How do I get to the Parcel Yard, Kings Cross venue?

The Parcel Yard is the converted sorting office at Kings Cross railway station. Right on the mainline and underground the Fullers Brewery venue is on the concourse. We'll be in the First Class Waiting Room.
