up for the cup: how #foxnewsfacts stormed the charts

Our post on the exceptionally brilliant response to the exceptionally stupid Fox News commentator stormed the chart this month. But what came second, third, fourth and fifth?

by Dan Slee

It was a typically Birmingham response. When an entire city was faced with slander it responded not in a fit of North Korean pique but with wit.

Fox News screened an interview with a 'terror expert' who claimed that the Midlands city was a no-go area for non-Muslims. The response? The #foxnewsfacts hashtag of bizarre and blatantly wrong facts that tweet by tweet took down the reputation of the Rupert Murdoch-owned TV channel.

We will, of course, send the special silver cup to Dan Wainright on the Express & Star whose tweet of Mecca bingo in Kingstanding was widely shared. Evidence that the city was a hotbed of Islam. And bingo.

In second place was our post on lessons from the unawards. The rather good event that we are planning on February 26 where we get bright people to share secrets on how to run campaigns better. The post is here.

In third place, Emma Rodgers' cracking post on the #thisgirlcan campaign. This looked at the initiative to encourage women to exercise. Praised by many for including real women it also was criticised by others for portraying a patronising tone. Girl? Aren't they women, some complained. It's a great balanced post and would have won on another month.

In fourth position, the comms2point0 survey with evidence that press releases are dying slowly. It also gives cause for optimism with the slow reversal of the trend to cut jobs.

In fifth spot, a senior firefighter talks about how his job on the ground is also to deliver some rough and ready comms to connect to people. Neil Griffths of West Midlands Fire Service's post is his first for comms2point0 and sails straight into the most popular list. Good work. You can read it here.
